The Kenchikai Kendo Club practices in Portland, Oregon, in the Central Eastside Industrial District. Founded in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, Kenchikai began as a virtual community of people learning and practicing kendo via Zoom. As public health restrictions eased, we began meeting and practicing in person. We later became an official club and a member of both the Pacific Northwest Kendo Federation and the All United States Kendo Federation.
The name Kenchikai (剣知会) can be understood as "a group that knows the sword." In this name, 剣 means sword, 知 means wisdom or knowledge, and 会 means gathering. We chose the name Kenchikai because we seek knowledge and understanding not only of what we practice, but also of how we practice it.
Our approach to practice blends modern and traditional elements. Our philosophy of teaching and learning is strongly influenced by ecological dynamics and the constraints-led approach, ideas that are only beginning to gain traction in the world of professional sports. Although our practice design and teaching methods are forward-looking, we also place great importance on traditional elements of kendo, including etiquette and the ways we show respect to others.

剣知会について
剣知会剣道クラブは、米国オレゴン州ポートランドのセントラル・イーストサイド工業地区で稽古を行っています。2020年の新型コロナウイルス感染症流行下に設立され、当初はZoomで剣道を学び、稽古する人々のオンライン・コミュニティとして始まりました。感染対策上の制限が緩和されるにつれて、対面で集まって稽古を行うようになり、現在ではPacific Northwest Kendo Federation（PNKF）およびAll United States Kendo Federation（AUSKF）に正式加盟する剣道クラブとなっています。
「剣知会」という名前には、「剣を知る会」という意味が込められています。剣は剣、知は知恵・知識、会は集まりを表します。私たちが剣知会と名付けたのは、自分たちが何を稽古しているのか、そしてそれをどのように稽古していくのかについて、知識と理解を深めることを大切にしているからです。
私たちの稽古スタイルは、現代的な要素と伝統的な要素をあわせ持っています。指導と学びに対する考え方は、近年プロスポーツの世界でも注目が高まりつつあるエコロジカル・ダイナミクスと制約主導アプローチの影響を強く受けています。稽古の設計や指導法は非常に先進的ですが、その一方で、礼法や他者への敬意の示し方といった、剣道の伝統的な要素も大切にしています。
